STANLEY E. PREVOST
Photographer of the Natural World
Beauty and variety in the natural world are infinite. They range from peaceful, quiet, and sublime to raging, tumultuous, and ferocious, from expansive vistas to the microscopic, from monochromatic to blazingly colorful . Nature has it all. It is up to us to discover and recognize it.
The beauty lies not only in the perfection of the objects we see, but also in the intangible qualities, such as light and shadow, for
m and texture, line, color, contrasts . All of these qualities combine to instill emotions in us. We often use words like stunning, awe
- inspiring, and breathtaking in an attempt to describe and communicate our emotions arising from what we see in nature, but the words are usually inadequate. Some of us turn to attempting to capture the qualities in photographs to better communicate their emotional appeal and to preserve the moment.
I began photography at an early age, using my mother’s Kodak box camera and the high school darkroom in a small town in Mississippi. I progressed through rangefinder and single - lens reflex cameras in 35mm format, then into medium format twin
-lens reflex equipment, and am now using digital equipment. The camera equipment and all the accessories are the photographer’s tools. Mastery of the tools and the craft is necessary to allow effective and high -quality portrayal of one’s photographic vision. The art and the craft go hand -in -hand, and I continually strive for improvement in both through continued learning and activity.
Although my primary emphasis and passion is nature photography, I do respond to what I see in the man-made world as well. Many of my images capture visually appealing patterns, colors and textures arising from human activity.
All my prints are produced with conservation -grade materials and techniques.
My wife Jeanne and I are both retired and we divide our time between Huntsville, Alabama, Grayling Township, Michigan, as well as many interesting and beautiful places which you can see in my photographs.
